Relief, rivers and lakes from Zambia:
Zambia is a country previously known as North Rhodesia and has a relief predominantly composed by hills and plateaus. The mountains are present in the south-east and north parts, where the Great Rift Valley is, at the border with Tanzania. There is Munchinga peak with its 2.301 m height which is the highest in Zambia. The electricity is produced with the help of the main rivers that cross the country, Luangwa and Kafue Rivers, but especially Zambezi River (flows into Kariba Lake), on whose course in west is situated the famous and beautiful Victoria Falls at the border with Zimbabwe. The most important Zambian lakes are Tanganyika and Mweru in north, Bangwelu in the central-north part and Kariba in south-east.
Climate, national parks, population, agriculture and resources:
The climate is tropical with medium temperatures due to the elevation and a high rainfall with over 1.500 mm annually. (Find more journeys on blog.worldlifetimejourneys.com) The territory is covered with tropical forests but predominate the savannas, rich in animal species (there are many national parks and reservations – Kafue National Park is one of the largest in Africa). The population predominantly composed by Bantu group (there are other 70-80 ethnic groups) is working in agriculture cultivating corn, cereals, manioc, sugar cane, sugar beet, cotton and peanuts and growing cattle, pigs and chicken. There are important resources of gold, plumb, coal, copper, cobalt and zinc. Unfortunately the country is continuously affected by the economical problems and tourism is still underdeveloped. The country obtained the independence from Great Britain at 24 October 1964. Visit Zambia!
