Relief, climate, rivers and lakes from Zalau City:

Zalau City is situated in the north-east part of Crisana‘s historic region, actually at the junction between Crisana and Transylvania, in a low relief depression area (Zalau Depression) with a plateau aspect (Sivania’s Plateau). This downy area (Sivania’s Hills) part of West Hills is situated between two mountain regions: Apuseni Mountains (Meses and Ses Mountains) in south and Oas and Maramures Mountains situated slightly in north and Transylvanian Plateau in south-east.

So, Zalau City is not so far from one of the most beautiful mountain areas of Romania. The average of the altitude is 250-300 m height. The climate is temperate-continental, with a high rainfall and relatively constant temperatures. Summers are hot, sometimes cool and winters are generally cold, but sometimes milder. The annual average of the temperature is 10-11° C and the rainfall reaches 700-800 mm per year. Zalau City is crossed by Zalau River tributaries and Varsolt Lake is nearby.

Name, fauna and flora of Zalau City:

The current name of Zalau City passed through several changes till 1968 when it was accepted under Zalau name. The name comes from Dacian word “Zilaj” meaning “belt” making reference to the semicircle form of the surrounding mountain area. Wider, of course that history of this name is more developed. Also Dacians gave the name to this area as Wine Valley, kept nowadays as well. Zalau and Salaj County areas are also called Silvania Country, meaning Forest Country because the city is surrounded by beautiful deciduous forests, very rich in species, which shelter a large variety of specific fauna and flora, which makes hunting potential to be high. Since long ago, Salaj County‘s capital was a powerful economic centre of the area and later an industrial and cultural one.

Tourist objectives and attractions:

Unfortunately today, Zalau City remains less known by Romanian tourists and even more by the foreign tourists and this is because it lacks of promotion. (Find more journeys on blog.worldlifetimejourneys.com) Tourist potential of Silvania area is very high and the beauty of the city itself is gorgeous. The tourist objectives and attractions of Zalau City and activities are very different and interesting.

You can choose it as a starting point in your hiking adventures in Apuseni Mountains, you can visit its old museums full of history and valuable objects, you can walk peacefully in its historic center and relax in one of its parks (it’s known that Zalau is a swinging city, but although silent and quiet) or you can go by car in a circuit of Silvania Plateau where its secondary cities (Simleul Silvaniei, Jibou, Cehu Silvaniei) will fascinate you for sure. Here castles or citadels thousands of years old await you, a gorgeous botanical garden in Jibou or other museums and tourist attractions which will enrich your visit. Visit Zalau City!
