Relief, climate, rivers and lakes from Tulcea City:

Tulcea City is situated in the north part of Dobrogea‘s historical region, in an eroded downy relief area, millions of years old (Tulcea’s Hills). The average of the altitude is only 30 m height, which makes Tulcea to be one of the lowest cities in elevation from Romania. The climate is temperate-continental maritime, with mixed influences coming both from the Black Sea and Sub-Mediterranean area or Siberian influences, during winter. Summers are hot and dry and winters are cold, but mild. The annual average of the temperature is 10-11° C and the annual rainfall of 400-500 mm. Tulcea City is crossed by Tulcea channel from the Danube River and Ciuperca, Zaghen or Somova Lakes are only some of the lakes close to the city.

Short history, importance and population:

Tulcea City was founded in 1506, under the name Tulcea even since Mircea cel Batran (Mircea the Old) reign and for more than 450 years it was under Ottoman domination. Once with the end of the 2nd World War, the city started to develop more and more and today Tulcea County‘s capital is the biggest and most important industrial, commercial, fishing and tourist center of North Dobrogea. Because it’s very close to the border with Ukraine, a part of the population is composed by Lipova’s Russians and Ukrainians.

Danube Delta, tourism and wine history in Dobrogea:

Tulcea City area is renowned nationally and internationally due to the Danube Delta and for its delicious wines. Due to the fact that is the main starting point to explore the Natural Biosphere Reserve “Danube Delta”, Tulcea is also known as “The city from the Danube Delta Gates”. Besides this small, but beautiful and quiet city, the main attraction of Tulcea County is Danube River Delta.

This marvel of the nature annually attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists who love the adventure, fun, fishing or simply those who love the nature and wish to go away, even for a few days, far from the daily stress and want to relax in this gorgeous fauna and flora paradise. As about Danube Delta you can read in another article. The delicious wines produced in the famous Dobrogea‘s vineyards (the best known is Murfatlar in Constanta County) will please even the most demanding people.

It’s said that Dionisos, the god of wine would be born in Tracia, on Romania’s actual territory and this is an important aspect for the delicious taste of Romanian wines. Beside Danube Delta and Murfatlar’s vineyards, the history left also its mark over the place, because Greek and Roman vestiges are everywhere in Dobrogea since long ago.
