Timisoara Citadel was for a long time the central point and several wars were given for this place. For a short period during the Hungarian reign, Timisoara was the capital of Hungary, something that only a few people know today. Even if the Ottomans were defeated, finally they conquer the city and the citadel in 1552 controling it for aproximately 200 years. After the Ottoman domination, Habsburgic Empire followed, so during time Timisoara‘s population mixed a lot and today its inhabitants have different origins (Romanians, Hungarians, Germans, Serbian, Jew, Roma, Slovakians, Bulgarians, Ukrainian, Turkish and others).

Economy:

Timisoara City is also known as the first city with street lighting (1884), but also the place where the Revolution from December 1989 started when the dictator Nicolae Ceausescu died and together with him the Communism also disappeared. Although most of the historic building and monuments were preserved, the city became a more modern one where many commercial centers and modern buildings contrasting with the historical ones were built. Timisoara and Timis County‘ s economy is based upon commerce, financial system, industry and more and more on tourism. This is highly developed and produces a good part of the local incomes.
