Relief and Nigerian climate:
Nigeria is one of the most developed African countries, a rich one and with one of the highest standards of living. It has a relief of hills and fertile plains in south, a relief of desert in north with the southern part of the Sahara Desert and in the central part is the Jos Plateau. The mountains dominate the east side towards the border with Cameroon and the Chappal Waddi peak with its 2,419 m is the highest. The climate in Nigeria is tropical with high constant temperatures during the year between 22 and 31º C and with abundant rains except the northern part. The central-north part is covered by savanna and the central and south parts by tropical forests among some of them were cut down to make place for the arable lands.
Rivers, agriculture and resources from Nigeria:
Niger River and its tributaries crosses Nigeria especially in the center flowing later into Guinea’s Gulf through a beautiful delta. More than two thirds of the locals are involved in agriculture cultivating cereals, sorghum, corn, yams, peanuts, oil palms, sugar beet, cacao trees, coco trees and citrus. But, because the population is going on increasing, a good part of the aliments are imported. This is a country very rich in resources that bring the most part of the earnings. The most important resources are based upon oil (among the world’s first producers), natural gas, tin, iron, coal, limestone, zinc, niobium, bauxite, gold and plumb.
Cities and population:
The capital of the country is Abuja since 1991, but the largest city and the most important port is Lagos with more than 8 million people which is also one of the largest cities in Africa. Nigerian population is very complex composed by hundreds of nationalities established here since long ago. (Find more journeys on blog.worldlifetimejourneys.com) The most numerous and the most important nations are Hausa, Yoruba and Ibo which compose a half of the entire population. Nigeria obtained the independence from Great Britain at 01 October 1960. Visit Nigeria!
