Relief, climate, rivers and lakes from Maramures County:
Maramures County has a mountainous and depression relief with numerous groups of mountains occupying the entire surface (Maramuresului, Rodnei, Tiblesului, Lapusului, Ignisului and Gutaiului Mountains). The lowest areas and the most important depressions are Baia Mare, Baia Sprie and Sighetu Marmatiei Depressions. The relief of Maramures County has a landscape of a rare beauty and the highest peak is Pietrosu peak of 2.303 m height. Maramures County‘s climate is temperate-continental, cooler than normal due to the influences coming from Siberia. Summers are hot, although sometimes are cooler and winters are long and harsh with frequently temperatures under 0° C. The rainfall of over 1.200 mm per year is among the richest in the country due to the high elevation. The main rivers are Tisa and Lapus with their basins and tributaries and the largest lakes are Firiza, Sasar, Nistru, Ocna Sugatag and Bucureanu Lakes (glacial lake).

Maramures County‘s flora and fauna are very rich in species due to the high altitude. Many of the forests of spruce, fir, pine or those of beech, oak, ash or elm are virgins, hosting a wide variety of fauna.
