Relief, rivers, lakes and climate of Malawi:
Malawi has a predominantly mountainous relief due to the fact that it’s crossed from south to north by the Great Rift Valley which dominates the country’s territory. In south-east close to the border with Mozambique is situated the country’s highest point, Sapitwa Peak with its impressive 3.002 m in height. (Find more journeys on blog.worldlifetimejourneys.com) The longest river, Shire which flows into Malawi Lake, crosses the plateau with the same name in south. It has a tropical climate with the monsoons presence and an abundant rainfall in the rainy season.
Agriculture, economy and other aspects:
Unfortunately in the dry season, the drought can affect the agriculture which is the main activity for the locals. The locals mainly cultivate plants like tobacco (the 2nd producer from Africa after Zimbabwe), coffee and tea trees, sugar cane, sugar beet, cotton, peanuts, corn, sorghum, citrus and others. Because the large Lake Malawi occupies a good part from the surface, fishing is a main activity that brings important earnings to the economy together with agriculture and the more and more developed tourism. However, is a low developed country with big problems in the teaching and sanitary systems and has a life expectancy less than 40 years. It obtained the independence from Great Britain at 06 July 1964. Visit Malawi!
