Relief and climate in Kenya:
Kenya is a country in a continuous development with a relief formed by a desert dry area in east at the border with Somalia, a mountain area in the center and west with the Great Rift Valley crossing the country from south to north. Kirinyaga or Kenya Peak at 5.199 m is the highest peak of the country and the 2nd in Africa. The rest part of the territory is covered by fertile plains and hills low in elevation. The climate is tropical with the monsoons influence and with the presence of the dry season between January-February and June-October and the rainy season between March-May and November-December.
Flora and fauna, rivers and lakes:
A large part of the territory is covered by tropical forests and especially by savannas that shelter a large diversity of flora and fauna (lions, cheetahs, leopards, antelopes, gazelles, giraffes, zebras, elephants, buffaloes, rhinos, monkeys, hippos, crocodiles and more than 1.000 species of birds), so Kenya is one of the African countries that have the most national parks and reservations (more than 50). Besides the presence of the Indian Ocean with Mombasa, the largest port and the 2nd largest city after the capital Nairobi, this country is crossed by several important rivers and has a shore to the largest African lake, Lake Victoria in south-west and also has Lake Turkana in north.
Population, agriculture, tourism and industry:
In Kenya more than three quarters of the population are working in agriculture cultivating coffee and tea trees, sisal, fruits, vegetables and cereals. (Find more journeys on blog.worldlifetimejourneys.com) Fishing is another main activity in the country and the tourism is more and more important bringing the most part of the earnings with more than 2 million tourists annually. Kenya is one of the best developed African countries based upon the alimentary, textile, wood work and the construction materials industries. It obtained the independency from Great Britain at 12 December 1963. Visit Kenya!
