Relief and glaciers of Iceland:
Iceland is situated 287 km away from Greenland and 798 km away from Scotland. The country is a young island with a volcanic origin situated on a major geological fault line – The Middle Atlantic Rift- which makes it to be one of the countries with the most volcanic activity in the world. The most part of the relief is represented by a rocky plateau with mountains. The ice permanently occupies 15% of the country’s territory and during winter most of the island is covered by snow or ice. Vatnajökull Glacier has the biggest volume of ice from Europe and it is also an active volcano. The coasts are crossed by deep gulfs, steep peaks and a lot of fjords.
Volcanic activity, capital Reykjavik and population:
Due to the volcanic activity, on this territory are a lot of springs with thermal water. The name of these thermal water springs which burst in the air, geysers, comes from a spring, also called Geysir. (Find more journeys on blog.worldlifetimejourneys.com) The abundance of hydroelectric and geothermal energy generates almost exclusively the electricity and heat needed by the country. Geysers are also a very important landmark in the country, together with the capital and the beauty and virginity of landscapes. Over a half of the population lives in the country’s capital.
