Relief, climate, rivers and lakes from Giurgiu City:
Giurgiu City is situated in the south part of Muntenia‘s historical region, in a low plain and meadow area. The main relief subdivisions where the city is situated are Burnazului Plain and the Danube Meadow. Because it’s situated on a low sandy soil, the average of the altitude is only 25 m height. So actually it’s situated in the Romanian Plain’s south end. The climate in Giurgiu City is temperate-continental of transition and here can be felt the eastern influences from Siberia, the western influences from the Atlantic Ocean or the southern ones from the Mediterranean Sea.
So, the differences of temperature between summer and winter are very big and unfortunately the two seasons of spring and autumn can’t be felt too much. Summers are hot, long and poor in rainfall and winters are long, cold with freakish weather. The annual average of the temperature is 10-11° C. Giurgiu City is crossed by the most important river from Romania and the second as length from Europe, the Danube River, situated on its left bank side. Steaua Dunarii (Danube Star) Lake is part from Giurgiu City and together with the park with the same name is a good place for relaxation, walks and fun.
Name, history and industry of Giurgiu City:
Giurgiu City is among the biggest and most important Romanian river ports. Together with the Bulgarian city Ruse, forms an eco region and a powerful commercial, industrial, economic, cultural, naval and tourist center. It is said that its name comes from Genoa people who built the city with the help of San Giorgio the protector. Giurgiu City has its own history and for many years represented a fortified point for the fights between Romanians and Turkish. Among the rulers who fought here were Mircea cel Batran and Mihai Viteazul (The Brave). Today you can see Giurgiu Citadel ruins and also other historic buildings. The naval and trade industries bring the most incomes for the city and for Giurgiu County, but the tourism in the area and its promotion are more and more powerful.
