History, name:
Drobeta Turnu Severin is a recently built city, less than 200 years old, but this place’s history is much older and richer, beginning even since Dacians and Romans time. Some of the best known wars between Dacians and Romans were here, on city’s current territory. Beside the well known Roman Citadel of Drobeta, built between 103-105, many other impressive Roman edifices are witness for the long history of this place.
The name Severin, given to the city once with its foundation in 1833 after the Peace Treaty from Adrianopol, comes from the Roman emperor Septimus Severus.
