Dominica

Fauna and flora, climate, name and other aspects:

Dominica is a country with a mountainous aspect, especially volcanic, with numerous national parks and reservations to protect the endemic fauna and flora. Its territory is crossed by more than 300 rivers and torrents. This small but beautiful island has a tropical wet climate with mountains covered by tropical forests, many of these untouched by human hand, hiding some rare species of plants and animals. Here exist more than 130 species of birds but also iguanas, crabs, shrimps serving as food for the locals. (Find more journeys on blog.worldlifetimejourneys.com) The name comes from the word Sunday (Domenica), because Columbus discovered it in a Sunday in 1498. It became a British colony in 1805, but obtained its independence in 03 November 1978. The parrot that appears on the national flag is part of the Imperial Amazon class, called the Sisserou Parrot and it is also the national emblem. Nowadays, on this exotic island are still living more than 3.000 descendants of the Caribbean Indians. Visit Dominica!
