Because of this, summers are long, hot and dry and winters are mild and short. The average of the temperature is 11-12° C. Craiova City is crossed by Jiu River, one of the most important from the country and Craiovitei Pond and Izvorului Lake are on its territory.
Name, history and population of Craiova City:
Craiova City‘s name has two origins. The first is given by the Slavonic word Krajl which means Crai (Don Juan) where Craiova means “nation or land” and the second name is given by Iovan Crai (Don Juan) who ruled here for a while. Like many other Romania’s cities, Craiova is a city with a rich and interesting history, but also so complicated. Even if on Craiova’s current territory was build a Roman settlement (Pelendava) a few centuries B.C., the current name was used only since the end of the 15th century.
