Location:

In Voronet village, several km south of Gura Humorului City where it belongs to.

How to get here:

By car:

The monastery is situated south of Gura Humorului City. From the European road E58 which passes through this city, follow towards south the signposts to Voroneţ.

From East: follow the National road DN 2E from E85 (Fălticeni) till Gura Humorului.

From Suceava follow the European road E58 towards west and from west follow the European road E58 from Baia Mare – Dej – Bistriţa – Vatra Dornei till Gura Humorului.

Transport:

If you don’t have a car to go around, you get to Voroneţ Monastery much easier than other monasteries from Bucovina because is very close to Gura Humorului City, an important  railway and roads junction from the heart of Bucovina. Daily buses and trains pass through here coming or going to different parts of Romania.

Voronet Monastery

 

History and construction of Voronet Monastery:

Voronet Monastery is built by the same ruler Stephan the Great in just 3 months and 3 weeks and is known as The Sistine Chapel of the East and is included in UNESCO World Heritage for its beauty and for its unique blue external color. It is one of the painted monasteries of Bucovina, whose first abbot was the Saint Daniil Sihastrul. (Find more journeys on blog.worldlifetimejourneys.com) The splendid external frescoes were added in 1547 when also the interior of the church was painted. In 1785, due to Habsburgic Empire who conquered Bucovina, the monastic life has stopped till 1991 when it started again as a nun monastery.

Paintings (pictures) and grave of Saint Daniil Sihastrul:

On the outside facades of Voronet tourists can admire different religious scenes like The life of Saint Nicholas and the one of Saint John the New from Suceava, Saint George killing the dragon, Heaven’s borders, but especially the wonderful and unique composition, bright in colors representing The Judgement Day.

On the southern facade are painted Iesei’s Tree and the Prophets of the Old Testament and on the northern one are painted the Akathist Hymn of the Annunciation and also images from Genesis. (Find more journeys on blog.worldlifetimejourneys.com) Also, here in Voronet Monastery you can admire the grave of the Saint Daniil Sihastrul, but as well the picture where Saint Stephan the Great is protected by Saint George.
