East entry: follow the National road DN73/73c from Brașov – Râșnov – Câmpulung – Curtea de Argeș.

West entry: follow the National road DN67 from Drobeta Turnu Severin – Motru – Târgu Jiu – Horezu.

South entry: follow the National road DN64 from Caracal – Slatina – Drăgășani.

When to go:

The best period to visit Râmnicu Vâlcea City is between April and September-October. Here you can come even during winter because close to Râmnicu Vâlcea and to the Southern Carpathians you can find many resorts for practicing the winter sports. But the season for walks and visits starts after the winter has gone. The temperature reaches the maximum during summer and the weather remains beautiful till the middle of autumn when it starts to get cool, earlier than in other areas due to the high altitude.

Relief, climate and waters:

Ramnicu Valcea City is situated in the north-east part of Oltenia‘s historic region, in a hilly and plateau relief known as the Getic Sub Carpathians which connect the Getic Plateau with the Southern Carpathians. In fact, it’s not far away from Cozia and Căpățânii Mountains. The city is surrounded by hills from all its parts. In north is Cetățuia Hill, in west is Petrișor Hill, in south is Troian Hill and in east is Capela Hill. The average of the altitude is 250 m height. The climate is temperate-continental of hill and the temperatures are relatively constant.

This is happening due to the fact that the area is protected from extreme temperatures and the city is situated at half distance between the North Pole and Equator. Summers are hot and winters are cold, but sometimes mild and long. The annual average of the temperature is 9-10° C, and the annual rainfall about 700-800 mm. Ramnicu Valcea City is crossed by Olt River, one of the biggest rivers from the country and Daești, Ramnicu Valcea or Olt Reservoirs are close to the city.

Ramnicu Valcea is a city with a rich history, as many other cities from Romania. Although there were found tracks of Roman civilization thousands of years old, the city began to develop late only during Mircea cel Bătrân’s period who established here the Royal Court (14th century) whose ruins can still be seen today.

Later Ramnicu Valcea became the reign city of Mihai Viteazul (Mihai the Brave), Matei Basarab and later of Radu from Afumați, all of them some of the greatest rulers from Romania. Imposing monasteries awe and inner peace inspiring were built on Valcea County‘s territory in all this period of several centuries. These places of worship, some of the most beautiful from Romania are a must to see no matter what religion you have. Among the most beautiful and important we mention Horezu, Cozia, Turnu or Govora Monasteries.

Population:

The city became to develop more and more beginning with the 20th century when the population was approximately 8.000 people. Since then it was recognized as an important economical and cultural center and today it’s the most powerful and biggest cultural, historical, commercial, industrial and tourist center of Valcea County and of Northern Oltenia.

It has some interesting museums, beautiful monasteries and historic buildings dating since the Romanian Country rulers time and for some tourists is the main starting point to visit Oltenia‘s northern part with its monasteries, but also the Southern Carpathians and the Olt Valley.
