Rivers, lakes, relief, climate, name and agriculture of Iraq:

Iraq has the largest fertile region in the whole Middle East, but its central and eastern parts are occupied by the basins of Tigris and Euphrates rivers, the main Iraqi rivers and also by big lakes as Tharthar and Razazah. The rest part of the territory has an unfriendly relief with the Syrian Desert occupying the western part of the country and Zagros Mountains in north and north-east, where is the highest peak Rawanduz with its 3.658 m height. The climate is pleasant with hot and dry summers and mild winters.

Iraq is also known as The country between the rivers, meaning Mesopotamia in Greek language, because it occupies a large part of the antic region with the same name. It’s one of the oldest inhabited regions in the world, more than 6.000 years old where lived the Sumerians and Babylonians. Nowadays the country is inhabited by Arabs with an important population of Kurds. The main cultivated plants obtained from agriculture are the cereals and the orchards and this country is the world’s leader in production of dates.

Resources, conflicts and cities:

It has important resources of oil and brimstone and is one of the richest countries in the world, but it’s trying to recover and to redevelop after many wars and conflicts with U.S.A. and the neighbor states. The best known war was the Gulf War with Iran between 1980 and 1988. (Find more journeys on blog.worldlifetimejourneys.com) Saddam Hussein governed the country between 1979 and 2003, but unfortunately during his government the country was in conflict with many of the world’s nations. The country’s capital is Baghdad, but cities as Mosul, Basra, Arbil and Kirkuk are not to be neglected. Due to numerous conflicts for the moment we do not recommend to visit Iraq!
