Hartibaciu Plateau

Location and importance of Hartibaciu Plateau:

Hartibaciu Plateau is a subdivision of Transylvania Plateau or Transylvania Depression, an area so well known everywhere in the world due to its name, but how many tourists outside Romania or even from here, know its subdivisions and especially its beauties which greet all those who pass its territories. One of the main, most beautiful and precious areas from Transylvania, culturally, historically and especially naturally is Hartibaciu Plateau situated in Sibiu and Brasov Counties territory north of the high peaks of Southern Carpathians, east of Western Carpathians and west of Eastern Carpathians. The biodiversity of this area is very rich and because of this, here were created several protected areas. (Find more journeys on blog.worldlifetimejourneys.com) The best known project, which focuses on the protection of this area with a high natural importance is known as Natura 2000. You can find more details on the websites from the left side. Hartibaciu Plateau – Tarnava – Olt area is in fact the second protected area from Romania after Danube Delta Biosphere Reservation.

Flora and fauna and protected species from Hartibaciu Plateau:

Even if it’s less developed from tourist point of view and less known, Hartibaciu Plateau this gorgeous area is in fact a combination between pastures and high fields rich in wild flora, swards where the steppe flora is mixed with the Carpathian one, beech, holm oak and oak forests, but more important than these is the local fauna. Some of the most important protected species are birds like lesser spotted eagles (Aquila pomarina – around 2.000 pears from the total of 20.000 in the world), blackthorn hawks (Accipiter gentilis), hornets nest, camp corncrakes, big owls (Strix uralensis), forest larks (in total 131 bird species protected nationally and internationally). Also, in Hartibaciu Plateau are mammals like wolves, bears, lynxes, wild cats (in total 23 internationally protected species of mammals), reptiles and amphibians like red belly bitter ponds (in total 10 species of reptiles and amphibians internationally protected), around 11 species of fish internationally protected and over 600 species of insects especially butterflies protected also internationally.

Agriculture, tourism, tourist attractions and objectives and what to see and do in Hartibaciu Plateau:

This area is on the other hand very important agriculturally and although here is practiced an intensive agriculture, more and more young people choose to leave these places leading to a lower agricultural economy. But we hope that from tourist point of view this area to be more developed and to grow up nationally and internationally. Beside biodiversity observation tourism, where we include mostly bird watching in this area, tourists can taste from the locally and nationally delicatessen in one of the participant locations at the culinary fair known as Transylvanian Brunch (usually between June – July and September – October). Tourists can also see how is the rural life in Romania and they can even feed the animals or help in the farm (this kind of tourism starts to develop more and more in Romania).

On the other hand as a unique experience, tourists can cross Hartibaciu Plateau either by car, but better by bicycle, because the landscapes are gorgeous. (Find more journeys on blog.worldlifetimejourneys.com) Also, Sibiu and Brasov Counties outside of Hartibaciu Plateau are rich in historical (see citadels, castles or fortified churches), religious (see churches and monasteries) or cultural (visit mostly Sibiu and Brasov some of the most beautiful from Romania) tourist attractions and objectives. If we talk about a protected natural area, tourists can taste one piece of adventure and fun, either hiking, using in a group the cyclo-handcar (details on www.sibiuagnitarailway.com) or with local farm activities, but doesn’t matter what you choose, be confident and you will have an unforgotten experience.
